In all activities related to the microwave technology, the same microwave capabilities are used: deep penetration into the material structure and rapid increase in the temperature in its entire volume. Regardless of whether materials, food products, or building constructions are subjected to drying, the same end result is obtained.

Too much water may contain naturally moist material (herbs, fruits, sand, wood) or moistened in technological process (plastic granules, ceramics, casting molds).

The drying process should take into account the physical properties, shape or structure of the material. In the case of many materials, water and moisture remain on their surface. In others, water penetrates into the interior. Drying parameters are very important for many materials. When choosing traditional drying methods, all these factors must be taken into account. In traditional methods, the surface of the product is dried first and then its internal structures. This is referred to as drying "from the outside to the inside". During drying of, for example, fruit, the dried surface prevents the removal of the moisture from the inside.
The material impact on the microwave drying process is smaller. Drying of any product is always done in the same way: "from inside to outside". This means, that the water is removed from the layers located closer to the surface.


Microwaves are extremely effective in drying processes. Better results are achieved by combining technologies. Thing impossible using other methods (e.g. a combination of hot air drying and vacuum drying) are not a problem in the case of microwaves. All other known drying methods can be combined with microwaves. Microwaves can be the dominant method or only support drying.


Every industry and production sector has its own specific needs. Among the many solutions, the most popular is a drying tunnel with conveyor belt. Lately, the technology of microwave drying in vacuum chambers has been strongly developed. In such system, high-temperature sensitive materials may be dried.
However, it is always necessary to select the appropriate device for the process and dried material.
